Grismael
The first made-in-Japan baby food was Grismael. Early childhood mortality then was 107 deaths in every 1000, caused mostly by pneumonia, digestive failure, malnutrition, and GI diseases. This situation made it even more urgent to develop an easy to digest, nutritional supplement food suitable for young children. Wakodo successfully developed a rice-based gelatinized gruel product in 1937. A 500g can with a replaceable push-in lid was sold for one yen.
